Four researchers will spend a year in an isolated model of a Martian station
NASA has launched the CHAPEA experiment to simulate life on a habital Martian station. Four individuals - a medic, an engineer, and two biologists - will live in isolated conditions for a year.
Within the project, collaborative efforts to maintain the functionality of the spacecraft and station will be practiced. Scientists will also observe the psychological compatibility of the crew members.
The participants of the experiment will settle in an isolated model of a Martian habital station, created using 3D printing. The model includes the living quarters itself and an imitation of the Martian environment around it.
The crew will receive commands from the ground control center, with a 22-minute communication delay, similar to an actual flight to Mars.
