New Zealand has become the first country to ban all plastic bags
New Zealand became the first country in the world to ban the use of plastic bags in supermarkets - even thin ones used for packaging vegetables and fruits.
Since the ban was implemented in 2019, residents of the country have used billions of fewer plastic bags. Despite this, the government believes that New Zealand still produces an excessive amount of plastic waste.
By eliminating thin bags, it is expected that 150 million of them will be prevented from ending up in landfills each year. In the meantime, shoppers will use reusable packaging.
