A short nap in the middle of the day may help protect the brain's health
Researchers from University College London have suggested that taking a short nap (30-40 min) in the middle of the day may help protect the brain's health as it ages. This habit is likely linked to an increase in brain volume.
As people age, their brain size decreases, which is accelerated in those with cognitive problems or neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, sleep difficulties negatively impact the brain.
"We have found a connection between daytime napping and a larger brain volume. This may indicate that regular napping provides some protection against neurodegenerative changes," note the researchers.
The scientists based their findings on data from the UK Biobank, which gathered extensive information on genetics, lifestyle, and health condition of people aged 40 to 69.
