Congress app tracks who buys off our politicians

Have you ever wondered what influences the votes of your local congressman or senator? Well, thanks to the awesome work of Sunlight Foundation for creating an Android app named Congress–that shows citizens what their representatives vote for and where they are fundraising. This is the perfect mobile application that exposes a corrupt government that fails to serve the people; who rather govern for those who pad their pockets instead. The app serves as an effective tool for a much more transparent Washington. And it allows people to stay on top of the folks they’ve voted for.

Once you download the application you’ll be pleasantly surprised of how good the user interface is, as it’s modified with Google’s Holo theme. Navigating from one place to another, isn’t at all cumbersome. The main menu include six choices to choose from, which are People, Bills, Votes, The Floor, Senate Hearings, and Committees. You can search any active politician and essentially stalk every… single… one… of their movements on The Hill (Washington D.C.). Hell, the app can even notify you of the latest activity. Crazy, huh?

The best part about this app is once you pick the politician you want to track, you can click the option menu where his or her biography is or hit the ‘OpenCongress’ link which bounces you out of the app into your phone’s browser. Once you are on the OpenCongress website, you’ll have the choice to see votes, videos and track that politicians Money Trail (which in code: is the legal bribes from “donors”).

The developers of the app, Sunlight Foundation, says on its About page that ” … it is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that uses the power of the Internet to catalyze greater government openness and transparency, and provides new tools and resources for media and citizens, alike.” The organization also runs a site called Influence Explorer, which tells folks what company, law maker, or prominent individual is influencing our political system.
